Rice Bran Wax is a food-grade vegetable wax obtained from the winterization of rice bran oil. It consists of high molecular weight monoesters ranging from C-46 to C-66. The refinement process allows the wax to retain policosanols, phospholipids, phytosterols and squalene which may confer some active benefits in topical skin products. Rice bran wax is often used as a substitute for carnauba wax.
It can reduce the stickiness of oils and is naturally soothing it is worth using with a high percentage of Castor Oil in a baby nappy rash balm.

Rice Bran Wax, when used in cosmetics, skincare, and haircare, will act as a thickener, binder, plasticizer, and gelling agent. In sticks, it contributes to hardness, texture, strength and mold release. It can be used as a substitute for Candelilla Wax in many formulations.

It is useful in the development of natural cosmetics and personal care products.

Compatibility

Rice Bran Wax is compatible with most vegetable and mineral waxes, as well as vegetable oils, mineral oils, and petrolatum.

Barrier Balm

Stage 1
35% Meadowfoam Oil
26% Sweet Almond Oil
15% Rice Bran Wax
11% Cocoa Butter 2% Calendula Infused Oil
Stage 2 (below 60°C)
10% Bamboo Isoflavones PF

1% Essential Oils

Method
Melt stage 1 in a double boiler. Allow to cool then add Stage 2 ingredients once the temperature has dropped below 60°C and stir in until fully incorporated.
If the mixture begins to set up too quickly, heat very gently until liquid & continue adding Stage 2 ingredients.
Allow it to cool.
Fill containers, allow to cool and label. The mixture sinks less in the middle if poured slightly cool.
If you find this balm is too solid, you can decrease the amount of Rice Bran Wax used.
This could also be used as a beard or moustache styling balm.

Great alternative to beeswax

I've been playing with the rice bran wax in different salves and balms, and have found it to be a great 1:1 alternative to beeswax. It is not glossy like candelilla wax, and provides a barrier more like beeswax does (in my opinion!).
