This Honeyquat has great conditioning properties and really adds to the quality and sensory feel of the lotions I make. But the problem is the smell. When you smell it out of the bottle, it’s fine. But in lotions, it smells like bad fish - most likely because it is a cationic conditioner, like BTMS-50. But unlike BTMS-50, the smell does come through when you use it at low percentages. I tried it at 1%, 2%, in the cool down phase, in the heated phase - each time, it still came through. After researching, it seems there are some Honeyquats that don’t smell so I do think it is worth using, but this particular one smells too heinous in formulation to continue using. Perhaps it’s just the specific formula I’m using. Use at your own risk.
my only concern is the smell - not nice at all.
i had a problem with the lack of information that came with the product - not sure if it was because its new ... but one very important piece of information i learned the hard way was i should never use honeyquat with xanthan gum in emulsions because it makes it unstable and that as an ingredient in general it needs extra emulsifiers to keep a formula stable! really nice product but needed a lot of experimentation to be able to incorporate it and would have loved more information about it.
