    Ferulic Acid Serum Formula

    April 30, 2022

    WHAT IS A FACE SERUM?

Lighter than a face cream and fast-absorbing, face serums are packed with high concentrations of active ingredients (think antioxidants, minerals and vitamins) and can help treat many skincare concerns - dark under eyes, dryness and fine lines, to redness and breakouts, plus so much more!. Serums also offer an extra boost of hydration, locking in moisture without clogging pores. A little goes a long way.

    Ingredients

    Phase A

    57% Warm Distilled Water

    0.1% Sodium Citrate Powder

    .50% Ferolic Acid

    .04 Caffeine Powder

    .50 DL-Panthenol Powder

    5% Ice Restore Powder

    Phase B

    30% Propanediol 1,3

    3% Glycerin

    1.6% Optiphen Plus

    1% Vitamin E T50

    1% L-Ascorbyl Palmitate Powder

    1. Combine Water and  Sodium Citrate Powder in Phase A and mix until diluted.  Add remainder of Phase A ingredients and mix after each addition. Use a whisk or mini mixer until mixture is combined.

    3. In a separate vessel, combine Phase B ingredients.  Stir to combine.

    4. Add Phase B to Phase A whisking until combined. A stick blender can be used at this stage.

Test the pH. Adjust to final pH 4-5 with drops of Sodium Citrate Powder in enough water to dilute, or Citric Acid Solution 50% if the pH is too high.

Fill, label and date your bottle. We used a baggy and cut one corner.

Shelf life:  12 months, do not leave in direct sunlight or extreme heat.

TIPS:  Make sure all your tools are sanitized before use.

A potent antioxidant, ferulic acid protects skin from free radical damage. Ferulic acid is also known as cinnamic acid. It also helps stabilize ascorbic acid. Amazing in water based serums along with panthenol and Vit. C. Final product is white.  The sensory feel is luxurious with fast absorbing action.

Difference between Shampoo Bars and Syndet Bars

      February 20, 2022 1 Comment

Soap Based Shampoo Versus Snydet Bars

      Soap-based shampoo bars

Soap-based shampoo bars have been around for a long time. They are formulated in the same way as any other bar soaps. The main difference is that the soap makers usually add some specific ingredients like castor oil and butters to make your hair feel good. Liz-ardlady adds apple cider vinegar to reduce the PH.

Soap bars are made from oils and lye. For a good bar there will be some oils left that nourish the hair.

The problem with soap is that it is alkaline and the hair itself is slightly acidic. So, you usually must treat your hair with something acidic like apple cider vinegar rinse to get it back to ph of 4.5 to 5.5.

As the hair needs to get used to the new type of treatment there may be an adjustment period and your hair may look and feel unpleasant. This may last from a few washes to several months and many people give up in the process and switch back to normal shampoo.

      Syndet shampoo bars

Syndet bars that use mild surfactants do not have a high Ph and if they do it can be reduced. These bars are literally like a bottled shampoo without the water.

The main ingredients to avoid are sulphates SLS (Sodium lauryl sulphate) as these often irritate your scalp. The other side effect sulphates may be that they strip the colour from coloured hair.

We prefer to avoid silicones. Silicones coat your hair and commercial advertising sas this is a good thing. Unfortunately, they do not tell you that it coats your hair so  that it cannot receive any nutrients from your shampoo. So, your hair feels flat with less lustre with everyshampoo and the customer feels that more product is required to get the same clean hair.

We recommend the use of conditioning agents like BTMS25 and proteins that improve elasticity, resiliency, and restore the moisture balance for smoother and softer hair that have a similar effect to silicones but allow the hair still to get all the nutrients it needs from the shampoo.
Syndet bars do not have an adjustment period, as the bar leaves the hair with a ph between 4.5 and 5.5.  Some formulas are soft for a few days and need to dry out. The advantage of shampoo bars is that they are plastic free and last a long time compared to commercial bottled shampoos.

      Organic Elderberry Syrup

      January 04, 2022

      Organic Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Makes about 3 cups of syrup without alcohol, 4 cups with alcohol.
      Active Time: 1 hour

      Ingredients

      • 2 cups dried organic elderberries (or 1 cup of fresh or frozen)
      • 4 cups cold water (distilled, purified, or spring water works best)
      • 2-3 tsp ginger root
      • 1 stick cinnamon
      • 1 cup raw honey or manuka honey if you can get it
      • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
      • 1 cup cognac (can be omitted)

      Directions

      1. Combine berries and herbs with cold water in pot and bring to a boil.
      2. Reduce heat and allow herbs to simmer 30 to 40 minutes.
      3. Remove from heat and let steep 1 hour.
      4. Strain berries and herbs using a funnel overlaid with doubled cheesecloth or undyed cotton muslin bag and squeeze out liquid (careful, liquid will likely still be hot!). Discard used herbs in compost.
      5. Once liquid has cooled to just above room temperature, add honey and stir to incorporate.
      6. If using cognac, add here and stir until well combined.
      7. Bottle in sterilized glass and store in the refrigerator.

      Pro tips:

      • Be sure to add honey in a ratio that is at least half of the total volume of liquid after it has simmered. This amount can change slightly, and you want to make sure you have enough preservative (honey) so that your syrup won't spoil. (Example: If you are left with 2 cups of elderberry decoction, you will want to add at least 1 cup of honey.)
      • This recipe is easy to multiply if you’d like to make a big batch to store or give as gifts (glass pantry jars and amber bottles are great choices!). My family enjoys a teaspoon or two of this syrup, right out of the fridge, just about every day during the sniffle season.
